SECTION 2
2. Outline control measures required to reduce risks to pedestrians in areas where vehicles are maneuvering (8)
Ans:-
Control measures to reduce risks to pedestrians in areas where vehicles are maneuvering
Segregation of vehicles and pedestrians
Appropriate road markings
Maintaining good visibility (Mirrors, lighting etc.)
Audible warning on vehicles
Drawing up and enforcement of site rules
Provision of refuges
Wearing of High visibility clothing
Good standard of housekeeping
Training and supervision
3. Identify the hazards associated with battery- powered forklift truck and outline the control measures for the same (8)
Ans:-
Hazards associated with battery- powered forklift truck
Hazards
Give off hydrogen gas – which is highly flammable
Electrical short circuits – due to poor circuits / wrong connections
Corrosive effect of acids – tissue burns
Manual handling – internal and external injuries
Precautions
Ensure good ventilation in the battery charging station
No sources of ignition/smoking in the charging area as hydrogen gas concentration may lead to fire/explosion
Suitable PPE like rubber gloves, apron, appropriate respiratory mask or respirator to be worn by personnel
Insulated tools are to be used while handling
Suitably designed lifting equipment should be used to lift off and replace batteries in forklift instead of manual handling
Another major hazard associated with battery-powered forklift trucks is that they are quiet when they move about or operate – leading to collision hazard. To overcome this,
High visibility clothing or reflective jacket is to be worn by personnel working in the vicinity
The vehicle and other pedestrian routes should be segregated and clearly marked
Forklift truck should have clearly audible reversing alarm as well as horn to caution personnel when approached or people come in close proximity to the vehicle.
Finally, revolving amber light can be fitted on top of the truck for easy visual identification
(Note: See how the Question Number 3 answered here. In question it clearly mentioned that Battery Powered forklift, which means NEBOSH priorities the Hazards related to Battery)
